The flat cap is a true classic at The English Hatter. In this series, The English Hatter – Telling Stories, Peter tells all about our special products. From corduroy trousers to lambswool sweaters, with this time: The English Hatter Flat Cap.
Flat cap, what is it actually?
A flat cap is a round cap, easily recognizable by the rounded short brim at the front and the flat silhouette. The flat construction of the cap is made of various soft, often woolen fabrics. The flat cap is a modern classic and became popular in 19th and 20th century England. The British aristocracy also adopted the flat cap and wore it on their estates, for example while hunting. However, the cap remains often associated with the working class in the United Kingdom.
Real classic
The English Hatter flat cap has been part of our range since our start in 1935. We carry this modern classic in various colours, patterns, checks and herringbone designs. The production of this cap is done by a number of renowned family businesses from Belgium with whom we have been working together for a very long time. The beautiful wool types that are used mainly come from Scotland, England and Ireland and in some cases from Italy. For the maintenance of the cap, hang it outside during a humid evening. Read more about the maintenance of wool in the blog about the lambswool sweaters.
Not just for men
Although our facade says "men's hats and caps", luckily the ladies are also finding us more and more often. And rightly so! The flat cap can complete a real English country look, especially combined with one of our beautiful Barbour jackets.
